What are dentures?

Dentures are teeth replacement options for patients who have lost many of their teeth, or patients whose teeth have become so decayed or damaged they need to be removed.

There are many potential causes for lost or damaged teeth, including:

  • Genetic decay
  • Natural wear and tear
  • Degradation due to dietary habits.

Who needs dentures?

Dentures are typically used as a solution for older patients whose teeth have become weakened and worn over the course of their life. However, dentures can be a good solution for missing teeth for patients of most ages.

The choice to get dentures rather than dental implants comes down to the number of teeth in need of replacement. Implants can be somewhat invasive and require enough bone mass to be properly supported. If multiple teeth are missing, implants may not be a viable option.

Dentures offer a far less invasive (and less costly!) alternative to implants.

How are full and partial dentures different?

Full dentures are used to replace an entire row of teeth on either the top or bottom jaw (or both!). Partial dentures, comparatively, are used to replace only a few teeth within a row.

Partial dentures are used when a patient still has enough healthy and natural teeth to not require a full removal and replacement. During our denture consultations, we can help you to determine which option best fits your needs. Though dentures may never have the full capabilities of healthy natural teeth, they come pretty close! Modern day dentures are crafted from durable materials and are designed to last for many years.
